Однако даже в самые трудные времена прекрасным средством пережить невзгоды был и остается старый добрый юмор.
В качестве видеоролика для занятия этой недели предлагается скетч американского комического артиста Дага Моу (Doug Moe), в котором он пытается на пальцах объяснить своему сынишке суть нынешнего финансового кризиса.

Товарищи, по-моему, с вариантами перевода для "бабы Клавы" вы несколько увлеклись. Там нет никакого негативного подтекста, просто пожилая женщина (бабушка) по имени Клава — примерно так, как вы зовете соседскую бабушку на лавочке возле подъезда.
Для этого есть простое слово: grandma Klava. И никаких тебе бой-баб с амазоноками .
да в общем то grandma Klava торговала самогоном весьма позитивно — даже нашару поила алкашей (видно производственные мощности позволяли) — но все-таки язык не поворачивается назвать такую grandma "бабушка Клава". Имхо как раз есть негативный подтекст — это окончательное спаивание безработных алкашей самогоном. Или это позитивно? Хотя возможно здесь играет роль менталитет и в англоговорящих странах такая ситуация вообще невозможна или выглядит по-другому.

So, Wall Street takes added turn of credits, makes great deals and grows tremendously reach. And they pay some back. The investors see this one a piece of the actions. This gives Wall Street an idea. They can connect the investors to the homeowners through mortgages. Here’s how it works. A family wants a house. So, they say for a down payment in contact the mortgage broker. The mortgage broker connects the family to a lender who gives them a mortgage. The broker makes a nice commission. The Family buys a house and becomes a homeowner. This is great for them because housing prices have being rising practically for ever. Everything works out nicely. One day the lender gets a call from an investment banker who wants to buy a mortgage. The lender sells it to him for a very nice fee. The investment banker then borrows millions of dollars and buys thousand more mortgages and put them into one a nice little box.
This means that every month he gets the payments from the home owners above the mortgages in the box. Then he seeks as a banker wizard on it to work vary financial magic, wich is basically cut into three slices. Safe, Okay and Risky.
They pack the slices back up in the box called a Collateralized debt obligation or CDO. A CDO works like three cascading trays. As money comes in, the top tray fills first, then spills over into the middle and if whatever has left into the bottom. The money comes from home owner's pay in after mortgages. If some owners don't pay and default on the mortgage, less money comes in into bottom tray (mean I get fill?). This makes the bottom tray riskier and the top tray safer. The … safe for a higher risk.
The bottom tray recieves a higher rate of return. One the top recieves the lower but still nice returned. To make the top even safer banks will insure it for a small fee (told it?) credit default swap. The banks do all of this works so the credit rating agencies will stamp the top slice as a safe AAA way to the investment. The highest safest rate in the risk. The Okay slice is BBB. Still pretty good.

So, instead of lending to responsible homeowners, called prime mortgages, they started to get some that were, well, less responsible. These are sub-prime mortgages. This is a turning point.
