Advanced Level

State of emergency has been declared by the governor as this Jesusita fire continues to burn out of control. More than 13,000 people have been evacuated because of this fire. The bulk of them on the hillside above Santa Barbara — those people that are just North of State Street and moving up the hillside where action news reporter Erin Clark is now standing by live for us. Erin?

Everyone needs to know what to do at the first signs of a forest fire. Especially now that it is summer time, the prime forest fire season. First of all, do not panic. Remember, during the first minutes of the fire even a single person can handle it. In an hour, it will take a well equipped squad, and 24 hours later, the population of the whole area will need to be mobilized to deal with it. Therefore, if flames have been spotted, measures to extinguish the fire must be taken right away.

Locus:

Everyone should know what to do with the very first signs of a forest wildfire. Especially now, when it's summer, and forests are highly flammable. First, don't panic and keep in mind that in the very first munutes, fire can be handled by one. After an hour, a well equipped crew will be needed, and after a day, the whole number of inhabitants. That's why it's so important to take action on extinquishing a fire immediately after it's been spotted.

with the very first signs — понятно, что хотели сказать, но все-таки так не говорится; правильно: at the first signs.

by one — опять-таки, нет выражения by one в значении «в одиночку»; можно сказать, например, by one person.

the whole number of inhabitants — знаете, как поймет эту фразу англофон?

Замечания по звуковой части: "are and moving up the hillside", "standing up live for us" (здесь live — это не глагол, а наречие «вживую»; послушайте, как произносится в оригинале).

Не могу разобраться: those people that are just North of State Street

Dmitry K,

— We will continue our coverage now of the Jesusita Fire that is burning in Santa Barbara.

— State of emergency has been declared by the governor as this Jesusita fire continues to burn out of control. More than 13,000 people have been evacuated because of this fire. The bulk of them on the hillside above Santa Barbara — those people that are just North of State Street and moving up the hillside where action news reporter Erin Clark is now standing by live for us. Erin?

— Hi Dan. I'm here with captain David Bucherbreiten, is that right?

— Breitenbucher

— Now, you've been on the fire lines all day. Tell us a little bit what it's like up there.

— Well, we've been on here doing mop-up/overhaul, hitting hot spots… What they've been worried about is the high winds that were supposed to be here this afternoon, kicking up embers and getting into the eaves of the unburned structures, so we've been going into the hot spots, knocking those down to try and prevent that.

— This is what we would call a hot spot?

— Yah, this was earlier, there was a bunch of… burning up and a lot of smoke coming out of the pile there that had not been extinguished, so we went over and took care of that… and spots around this area.

— Is this… is this fairly typical of what you're seeing, a house completely burned to the ground here? Well just across the valley not very far away houses are just fine.

— It just depends on the nature of the house, how they were taking care of it, the structure of, you know, what kind of roof they had, how much clearance they had around it.

— You are getting a bit of a break with the winds, they do… they are a bit gusty, and we are feeling about certainly nothing like we were facing yesterday.

— No, the crews yesterday, they were really getting beat up from the wind. They were expecting high winds today and tomorrow, but today, they really didn't get that… in this area didn't get that bad, so… fortunately, we've had a break.

— If you get a break in the winds, is that where you could really start to make some progress with this?

— Yes. Yah.

— No break in the winds, and you are just holding?

— Yeah, we are just following the fire as it keeps going.

— All right, thank you, and thank you for the work you're doing. Ok, thank you.

— So Dan, that gives you an idea of what firefighters are facing out here. A lot of mopping up quite frankly. When something like this burns to the ground, there are a lot of hot spots that can frankly re-ignite, or the embers can get into the air and the house next door is in trouble, so they wanna make sure that doesn't happen, so they have crews of maybe 4 or 5 moving through these areas, taking care of these hot spots.

— All right, Erin, thanks very much. We'll get more from you in just a little bit.
