Halloween is one of the most loved American holidays. The
day before All Saint’s Day is celebrated in nearly every house of America.
Before Halloween, families decorate their houses with various things. Some
people put fake and real carved pumpkins all over the place, hang leafs of
different colors everywhere and place candles, apparently trying to light their
houses on fire. Other families choose to decorate their houses in a “scary”
fashion. They place spider webs on their windows, spooky pictures inside the
houses and tomb stones on their front yards. On October 31, kids, dressed up in
all kinds of different costumes, walk around their neighborhoods, asking for
candy. Halloween costumes usually made after different monsters, ghosts,
skeletons, witches, and devils. Eventually, the costume makers started to
include popular characters from stories, celebrities, and other characters,
such as ninjas and princesses. Dressing up in costumes and going
trick-or-treating was popular in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween by the late
19th century. Dressing up became popular for Halloween parties in the US in the
early 20th century, as often for adults as for children. The first
mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when
trick-or-treating was becoming popular in the United States. Halloween costume
parties generally fall on or around October 31, often on the Friday or Saturday
before Halloween. There are some usually associated with Halloween parties. One
common game is “dunking” or “apple bobbing,” in which apples float in a tub or
a large basin of water and the players must use their teeth to get the apple
from the basin. A variant of dunking involves kneeling on a chair, holding a
fork between the teeth and trying to drop the fork into an apple. Another
common game involves hanging up treacle or syrup-coated scones by strings;
these must be eaten without using hands while they remain attached to the
string, an activity that inevitably leads to a very sticky face. Therefore,
Halloween is awesome.
